Snow Christmas Part 1

Nate Christmas 12

So we had a great Christmas here at the Snow Home in Layton.  We spent it with family and we felt very fourtunate to have both of our parents so close.  So we are going to post some pictures and stories about some of the gifts the we recieved.  Some of them have some fun stories that we think would be fun to share.  I also have some really cute pictures that I took of Nate on Christmas afternoon.  I hope you enjoy them.

Backerboard

I updated the remodel group with some photos that are a few weeks old.  They show the backerboard that I placed in the shower surround area as a preparation for the tile.  I placed 1/2-in on the walls to give the tile some thickness out from the rest of the wall and 1/4-in on the floor.

Nate on the MOVE

So Nate has really been cruizing around the house now that he can walk pretty well when he isn't tired.  We took some pictures of him while we were putting up some Christmas decorations.  Enjoy!

Plumbing

When I started this whole project I didn't think that I would need to do any plumbing.  I'm not sure why I didn't think about it because Julie and I had already chosen new hardware for the tub and shower!  It took my dad and I two days to put the stupid manifold together without any leaks!!!!  It was a really crazy weekend that included going one night without water because home depot closed before we could get the part we needed!  Anyway, most of the soldering went really well but when it came time to connect the last piece we always sprang a leak in one of the elbows.  We put that stupid thing back together like three time with no success until we finally decided to use galvanized steel and compression tubing and be done with it.  Why we didn't do this in the first place, I have no idea?  It only took us like 15 minutes to repair the problem that we were having and then we were up and running.

Plumbing Close Up

Before we started on the plumbing we had quite a time with the new tub.  Our new tub was freaking heavy.  It took all the effort that my boss, elders quorum president, and I could muster to get it upstairs.  We got it into the bathroom and then it took the three of us, including my dad who showed up to help, about two hours to get it into place!!!!!  That tub was freaking heavy!

So things are going much better now and we've made a ton of progress but you'll have to wait for more information!  Oh and I updated the remodeling group so check out the new pictures.

Demolition

The demolition phase of our remodeling project was quite strange for me.  Indeed the first cut into the drywall was sort of tramatic.  Sure, I've broken tons of things on purpose just because I wanted to see what would happen.  But this time it was different, I was breaking my house!  We spent a lot of money on this house and I was breaking it!

Demo 1

Anyway, I ripped out the drywall above the tub and shower enclosuse and removed the old fiberglass tub with a sledge hammer and a jigsaw!  It was pretty fun stuff.  I also removed the old floor and a lot of the old trim.  Enjoy the pictures.

So I didn't take enough pictures of our bathroom before I started ripping it apart!  Anyway, here is one picture just to give you a flavor for how crazy the change was!

The Power of Patience

Isn't patience the most amazing attribute and blessing?  Being surrounded by patient people is one of the greatest blessings I have and I really do try to be patient myself.  It is really interesting that patience is so closely related to charity and that charity is the most important of attributes!  These remarks by Elder Robert C. Oaks of the Presidency of the Seventy are very insightfull.

The Book of Mormon provides insight into the relationship between patience and charity. Mormon, after pointing out that if a man "have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity," goes on to name the 13 elements of charity, or the pure love of Christ. I find it most interesting that 4 of the 13 elements of this must-have virtue relate to patience (see Moroni 7:44–45).

First, "charity suffereth long." That is what patience is all about. Charity "is not easily provoked" is another aspect of this quality, as is charity "beareth all things." And finally, charity "endureth all things" is certainly an expression of patience (Moroni 7:45). From these defining elements it is evident that without patience gracing our soul, we would be seriously lacking with respect to a Christlike character.

Next time something tests your patience - and if you're like me that is at least somewhat often - try to embrace patience which is one of the most important attributes that we can embody.  To those people who show so much patience for me, thank you.

Hello Google Talk - Goodbye MSN Messenger

So I have been searching for a long time for a replacement for MSN Messenger and it now MSN Live Messenger.  My issues with messenger?  It is too big and bulky, it doesn't look nice (UI is bad), ads (I really hate these), and all the extra stuff that I don't need.

So I tried a few different alternatives such as GAIM, aMSN, and Instan-T Messenger, before I found an alternative that I liked.  I should say that I found Kopete for Linux (that is the app I use in Linux) that is really nice but it doesn't work on Windows.

Gaim and aMSN both had pretty old looking UI's as well so I was not all for those.  Instan-T was pretty good but file transfers had problems and I kept getting invitations from strange people.

Finally I thought about how much I used to like Google Talk when it first came out.  I stopped using it because it didn't have file transfer capabilities and none of my friends used it.  Bummer.

I recently heard that Google Talk had added file transfer support so I decided to look into it again and see if I could get my msn contacts in Google Talk.  I'm happy to report that Google talks UI is even better than before.  GTalk is small, simple and elegant in use.  It is easy to configure and doesn't a ton of other stupid stuff like games.  It is just a chat client that doesn't get in my way.  I'm even happier to report that there is a way to get any chat protocols contacts in GTalk.  Yeah!!!!

I have found this to be so cool that I decided to post the instructions here for everyone to use if they want some of the same things that I was looking for.  I must warn you that it is not super easy.  It is a little tricky but I think I have put together a pretty good little guide.

First of all, GTalk is based on the Jabber Open Source XML technology that is mainly used for instant messaging.  So there are like a million different jabber clients that can be used for instant messaging.  The problem is that many of the other IM clients use other languages or protocols or whatever - they just don't work together.

We need to use a transport sever that can convert the messages from one IM system to another.  So using a transport sever we can now use any of the jabber applications for msn, yahoo, or whatever other type of messaging system we have friends on.  Very cool!

So here is the hard part, we need to locate a transport sever for the sevice that we want to transport to google talk and then we need to configure it to work with google talk.  This is a little more difficult because google talk does not have an interface to configure a transport.  We have to use another jabber client to accomplish that step, but it isn't too hard.

So to get started, download and install both Google Talk, and Psi.  So I did like Psi as well so if you end up liking that one I recommend it.  Launch Google talk and login.  So if you already have gmail accound then you already have a login and password for google talk.  Otherwise you can set one up through google talk.

Now to configure Psi and set up the transport.  Launch Psi and see the instructions here to configure it for use with google talk.  A couple of the menus changed so let me know if you have any questions about that part.

Now to setup a transport.  You need to decide how many you will need.  For instance if you only have friends on msn, then you just need a msn tranport.  If you have them on other systems such as yahoo then you will need another one to work with yahoo.  This part will make or break you experince.  These transports run on servers that anyone can set up.  So some work better than others.  You can set up your own if you want!!  Here is a list of some available transport servers.  I have tried a few and I have now found one that seems to work pretty well which I will share with you soon.  More to come so stay tuned!!

Tub Trouble

So we have those one-piece plastic inserts for both of our upstairs bathrooms.  I didn't think that I was heavy enough to actually crack the bottom of the tub but it has happened in our master bath.  What is up with that!  So here we are scrabbling to replace the plastic crap with a real tub, tile on the backsplash area and floor, and do some painting as well.  If anyone would like to offer a hand, I could really use some help for some parts of this remodel.  I'll be doing this over the thanksgiving weekend starting Friday.  If anyone would like to help then drop me a line.

Steps

Much to our amazement, our son took his first steps today!  We are so proud!  Julie was conversing with her sister who said, "when is he going to start walking?"  Julie thought to herself, "he still has a ways to go."  Then Julie turned to look at Nate and he was walking towards her!  Holy Cow!  That is so amazing and we are so proud of him.  He thinks that walking is super cool and he always smiles while doing it.  Julie thinks that Nate was waiting for the perfect moment to show off.  Can you believe that?

Nate and Doritos

Nate in Pile of Doritos

One day I was sitting on the couch while Nate was playing.  I heard a weird noise so I went into the kitchen where Nate had gotten into the slightly opened pantry and pulled all the food within his reach down.  He'd decided to try Doritos! He actually really liked them, contrary to the last picture in this set.

Remember to get out to Vote

Today is election day.  Remember to do your civic duty and go vote.  Most candidates have webpages which makes it much easier to gather information on them.  Some don't however and it is really frustrating!

Let's be sure not to vote for a democrat or a republican just because that is what we do.  That doesn't work anymore and there is too much corruption on both sides.  We must look at each candidate and make a specific decision based on their platform and value set; not on their party.

Email Etiquette

To BCC or Not to BCC

So you might be saying, "why is forwarding email using cc such a big deal"?  Well it is a big deal and I'll tell you why.  When you forward an email using cc your email address becomes part of a chain that will go from person to person for a very long time.  Eventually that email may get to a person who is a dirtbag and may sell all the email addresses in the list to spammers!!  Now if you don't care about getting tons of junk mail then you don't need to worry about this.

The big problem is that the sender of the mass email using CC is also exposing everybody else's email to the possible spammers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever someone puts me on there forward list I promptly ask them to remove me from the list or to use BCC.  There are some exceptions to this that I have adopted at my discretion but as a rule I remove myself from such lists.  And, I also get no spam which makes my life very nice.

So as a public service announcement, !!!!!NEVER FORWARD EMAIL TO MULTIPLE RECIPIENTS WITHOUT USING BCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All about Nate

It has been quite some time since I've written about Nate.  I can't believe how quickly he can grow and how much he can learn from one day to the next.  So what is he like these days?  It is pretty strange but for 30 to 60 minutes at a time he actually likes to spend some time on his own.  He needs to know that mom and dad are close by but he doesn't need as much interaction anymore.  He has learned to wave hello and it is sooooo cute!  He still loves to click his tongue by himself and when mom and dad do it too!  Nate keeps turning more and more into a little boy instead of a baby.  Now he just wants to keep playing instead of falling asleep.  It is so cute to see him fight off sleep!  He laughs and smiles like crazy!!!!!  I always wonder what he is thinking and I want to talk to him soooo bad.  He is my little boy and I love every second that I get to spend with him.

Akeelah and the Bee

Have you ever heard anyone complain that Hollywood does not produce an good natured films?  I have heard so many people complain about stuff like that.  Anyway, I had heard a lot of good things about a film titled, Akeelah and the Bee.  It has been in our blockbuster online queue for quite some time and finally came the other day.  Well, all I can say is that Julie and I loved it.  You must see this film.

Does anyone have a computer that they are not using any more?   I'm looking for something to convert into a linux box and start messing around with that operating system.  I eventually want to make my laptop dual-boot windows and linux but I need something to practice on before I do it to my own computer. Let me know.

Gondwanaland

So when I was a kid my dad told me that when the continents were all connected that it was called Gondwanaland.  I thought that I was pretty cool and smart.  Years later in elementary school the teacher asked what the name of the land mass was when all the continents were stuck together.  I was so excited and I raised my hand and said, "Gondwanaland!"  Much to my dismay the teacher said that was incorrect!  All the kids laughed at me and I was really embarrassed.  I mean let's face it, it does sort of sound funny!  I was like no it's not!  Anyway, I was troubled by that experience for some time.

So the other day Julie was doing her homework for one of her classes - Natural Disasters - and she said to me, have you ever heard of Gondwanaland.  I was so excited when I heard her say that!  So I asked her what it was and told her that I had definitely heard of it!  So Gondwanaland is actually the name of the southern supercontinent after Pangea split.  For your information the northern supercontinent was called Laurasia.

Cool Article on Dark Matter and Energy

I was reading a post over at the Bad Astronomy Blog where Phil mentioned that some pretty cool developments have occurred in the area of dark matter and energy.  He referenced a very good article on the new developments at the CosmicVariance site.  It is pretty compelling and well explained.

Fear

Julie and I were discussing how interesting it is to watch kids begin to learn fear.  Up until a few weeks ago Nate wasn't afraid of anything.  Now every once in a while something will freak him out for no reason that we can see.
The other day Nate was playing with some toys that his great grandma gave him.  One is like a sink with a dishwasher and the sink had a spray hose.  So he was playing and having a great time when I decided to pull out the spray hose.  For some reason this just freaked him out like crazy!  So I picked him up and put the spray hose down.  I wanted to see if that was really what was going on so I pulled out the spray house again and he started to freak out once again!

Scary Toy

Nate is also practically fearless when it comes to climbing things.  It has been so interesting to watch him learn that things can hurt him and that he needs to be careful.

I was going through some photographs and found this AWESOME picture of Rob at his Junior Prom in 1997. It's such a great picture and I just laughed. So I thought I'd post a comparison picture of me at the same age (17). Do we look like we belong together? Even back then?

Humble Dwelling on Lifou

Humble Dwelling

I will be posting some pictures from my mission the next few weeks. A lot of strange and interesting things happened to me while I was serving in New Caledonia.

In March of 2000 another missionary and I reopened the Loyalty Island of Lifou. The local government was basically organized in tribes with a great chief over the entire island. When we arrived we stayed with a local family while looking for a place to live.

This is a picture of our humble abode. As you can see it is not exactly the Marroitt. The floor is concrete with a loose roll of linoleum spread over it. We laid a couple of mats down under our 3 inch mattresses and I of course installed the mosquito netting! Or clothes were hung on a wire that we nailed into the window frames. Nobody had glass windows here, it was either open to the air of covered in plywood! The family trash pit was located 2 feet away from our front door as you can see in the picture below!

In spite of how difficult the living conditions were I had many amazing experinces while serving on Lifou and I hope to share some of that here. Here are some other pictures.

Nate News

We want to share some of the cool things that nate has been doing. We noticed that he recognized his name for the first time today! We were at the beach where he was playing with the sand and when we used his name he looked at us and smiled and when we used other words and names he just kept playing in the sand. We were so happy! He now has two teeth and is scooting around like crazy and even tries to catch countess! He likes to wrestle with his shamu stuffed animal and open the TV stand and pull out all the DVD's! He likes to make noise on the piano and especially jump in his bouncer! It is so fun to see him learn and develop. We see something new almost every day. What a crazy experience!

Long Time Away

So it has been a really long time since I have done much by way of blogging. We have just been so busy over here. But I'm taking a couple minutes from my thesis work to share a couple cool things I came across today. If you have ever wanted to digitally sign your emails, you can do it now for free at the comodogroup website. I got two of them for the two email address I use the most. If you get a message from me in the future you should see my digital ID attached. Also I saw a really funny video at youtube.com. It is about Darth Vadar's Kid brother - Chad - who is not quite as cool. Check it out!

Gross

So one day at church while walking Nate in the halls listening to sacrament meeting I saw something that almost made me puke. In the Foyer of the church some 20-year old girl was clipping her toenails! Never before have I seen something like that! Clipping your toenails in the privacy of your own home is bad enough, but please do not do it in public!!!!! It's freaking nasty!!! So I will never be able put Nate on the floor in another church foyer without worrying about him eating toenails!!!!! I'm ruined for life!

We are Settling in

Our move on Wednesday night was successful. We had a ton of help and are so grateful for all the people who took time out of there week to come get us moved. It took until this morning for us to get our internet connection going. It was a long weekend without the internet. So Julie and I got a new bed and are currently shopping for some new cherry wood blinds. Nate has his own bedroom once again and has his own bathroom too! I set up the grill that Julie and Nate got me for father's day and we grilled some cheeseburgers! I'm grilling some New York strip steaks tomorrow! It has also been really fun setting up shelves in the garage and finally having a garage for the car. We'll take some pictures soon and get them posted for you to see.

10 Reasons that Soccer is the Best Sport

So I'm pretty annoyed to hear everyone talk about why soccer is such a boring, dumb, silly, wimpy, and slow sport. I have prepared a list of my top ten reasons that soccer is the best sport in the world. I hope you all find these informative.

  1. I like it
  2. The World Cup is an international competition not just U.S. teams playing against other U.S. teams and proclaiming themselves as world champions.
  3. It is more athletic than other sports - more running, larger field, no timeouts.
  4. The players must play the entire game - if they sub out they cannot come back in.
  5. Soccer shorts and soccer legs - as submitted enthusiastically by Julie.
  6. No set plays
  7. Short people have the advantage over tall people because speed and agility triumph over height and coverage.
  8. No pads allowed - real men play this sport!
  9. Yellow and Red cards are so much cooler than sissy flags!
  10. The last 10 minutes of the game doesn't take 40 in real time!

Are We Failing?

I read an eye opening article at ksl.com - which I must admit was surprising. Anyway, it talks about Crate & Barrel and the Cheesecake Factory not building stores at the Gateway because to few Utahns are college graduates! Now I don't give a crap about the stores but I do care about our declining population holding college degrees. What is going on here? This is a disturbing trend when it is clear that more and more jobs require college degrees for basic qualification. I think more women are getting degrees than ever before so are the men to blame? What do you think?

Moving Again! What the Crap!

We cannot believe it but we found an amazing townhome in Layton (Lay-Ton), not (Laytn) that had been on the market for 1 day. So we made an offer that same night and today we found out that we GOT IT!!!!!! We have looked as so many places and this one is just perfect! We are so excited and grateful to have found something great in our price range. Anyway, we'll be moving in about a month! Hope you guys all want to help!

Breanna is Engaged!!!

So you will not believe it! My little sister is getting married on August 11th. Her finance's name is Gene and he is from South Dakota. They met at school in Boise and have been dating for almost a year I think. Anyway, congrats to Breanna. We wish her our best.

Crazy Vegas Trip

Fountain Front

Where do I start? This was a pretty funny trip that Teresa Hunt and I took when we were 16 years old. Let me tell you up front, I don’t know what we were thinking. We didn’t really get into much trouble or anything, but believe me, the opportunities were there unfortunately. How about if I start from the beginning? But first a disclaimer: some events have been left out…but don’t use your imagination too much.

So Teresa and I had just gotten our driver’s licenses and thought it’d be cool to go to Vegas (we told our parents we were staying with friends in St. George). We left early on Friday, checked into a hotel in St. George using our community college ids. That night we drove to Vegas and walked up and down the Strip all night taking pictures and goofing off. Finally, at around 4am we decided we needed to get back to St. George. We were so tired that we went to our car parked in the Caesar’s Palace parking lot and fell asleep for about an hour. Then we started driving back, but being inexperienced drivers we couldn’t even find the freeway entrance. We drove around Las Vegas for about 2 hours before finally making it to I-15 North. We were so tired! At this point we had only gotten an hour of sleep since 5am the morning before. We each had to pull off to the shoulder every 20 minutes or so all the way back to St. George so we wouldn’t fall asleep at the wheel. One time we both had to close our eyes for a few minutes before we started off again. Very, very, very dangerous. We were really stupid. Then, the car started overheating! We made it to Mesquite and stopped at a gas station. After lifting up the hood, we just stood there, dumbfounded. Like we knew what to do! Luckily, someone was kind enough to tell us to just put water in the radiator. We finally made it back to our hotel, slept for 3 more hours, then head home. That was when we got our navels pierced!

Well, kind of a long story, but fairly entertaining. Looking back on those teenage years I realize how blessed I am to have gotten out alive (way too many dangerous situations for a young teenage girl to put herself in). Well, kids do crazy things. I can only hope that Nathan takes after his dad instead. Hahaha. Yeah…..right ;)

Crazy World

So I have been neglecting my blogging as of late because of all the crazy things that are going on. I got my B. S. and started my first real job - I'm a really engineer now by the way - and continuing to work on my thesis and shopping for a place to live is really hard work. Wow, what a week. Anyway, I'll get back to some more regular blogging soon.

Gas Gas Gas

Holy freaking crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has anyone filled their gas tank in the last few days? What a mess. I costs like 30 bucks to fill up our little Corrola!!!!!!!! This is just too much. I'm really glad I'm taking a job much closer to home now. It will save us a ton in gas hopefully. I'll be able to take Trax and then my bike the rest of the way. Pretty cool! I have two offers and I'm really having a hard time deciding on one of them. They are both really good for different reasons.

I just uploaded some new pics of Nate on our Flickr Site - See the sidebar. They are way cool!

Washington DC 2003

I had an opportunity to go to a certification class for work in Washington D.C., so this was a good opportunity for Rob to come along. We flew out there two days after a major hurricane went through the area. We spent a couple days in Arlington and few downtown just a few block from the National Mall and we liked both areas very much.

Here we are in front of the Capitol Building on a beautiful day.

Arlington

Walking through Arlington National Cemetary was a singular experience. The ambiance was calm, peaceful, and solemn. It also overlooks a lot of the monuments. This was one of our favorite spots - Do not miss it!

Decap

We asked someone to take our picture in front of the Lincoln Monument and it was so kind of him to cut off Lincoln's head. Plenty of floor in front and still no room to squeeze in the rest of President Lincoln.

See the rest of our images in this gallery.

Is My Family Prepared?

How to approach this subject? Most of you know that I am studying the effects of earthquakes on soil and buildings. So I take earthquake hazards very seriously. The first thing we considered in shopping for our latest appartment was how Julie and I felt that it would hold up in an earthquake.

Since it is the anniversary of the 1906 Sanfran earthquake a lot of people are more aware of the hazards of earthquakes. An article in the deseret news was sent to me by one of my professors from the U of U. This article does a good job in summarizing the effects of the big one and also with the little things that will make a huge difference in our well being or even survival when the big one occurs. Please read it!!!

Help Wanted

Looking for 9 ring wraiths to hunt down the one true ring that I lost on vacation in Hawaii. Must be willing to travel: airfare can be provided if you do not have your own flying beasts. Those without black horses need not apply. Black evil dolphins are a plus. The ring was last seen in Hanauma Bay on the windward cost of O'ahu above a shallow bed of coral. See picture below.

What a Smile

Nate Big Smile!

So I am totally amazed at how much Nate smiles. It is so great! This picture is so dang cute. It is really funny because he does cry more than the average baby (maybe) but he sure does smile more as well!!! It is so much fun to play with him and see in his eyes that he knows me and thinks that I'm just sooooo funny!!!!!!!

By the way, I have uploaded some pics of Julie and me for our engagement as well as some funny pics of me playing the drums.

Julie joins the blogosphere.

So the other week Julie turns to me and says, "hey, I think I want to start a blog. I have a great idea and I want to know what you think." So she explained her idea and I thought it was fabulous. We thought about a good url for about a week and it finally came to us. www.juliepages.info I checked out her first post and it was a lot of fun. Keep checking her page, I expect very good things from her. I put a permalink to her site in the sidebar.

Nate Laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nate & Me Crop

Guys, you will not believe this. So this evening after we got home from the day's varied activities I decided to play with Nate for a while. He was sitting in his chair and starting to get a little bit annoyed just sitting there. So I hovered above him and started smiling at him and making all the funny noises that dads make to their children. (Dad's really are the best and making funny noises!!!) Anyway I was making weird noises and shaking my face at him and MUCH to my surprise he sort of went, "ha ha" and I was like, "hey he laughed!!!!" I said to Julie, "did you hear that," and she said yeah with much excitement. So I kept doing what I was doing and he did it again just a little longer!!!! We are so happy!!!! Nate is such a happy little boy as most of you know. He smiles and smiles and smiles, and he also cries quite a bit but I think that is a part of his personality right now. We'll see how he continues to develop.

Hey guys, I just want to let you know that I have started a del.icio.us feed. If you don't know what del.icio.us is you might check it out. It is basically a good way to share all the cool things we all look at online. When we find something cool we tag it to our feed in a click or two and anyone who cares can see what we think is cool. So you can always click on the link in the sidebar but I recommend using a feed reader such as newsgator (free online based feedreader that I use). For instance, I have a link to a desktop search client that I think is fabulous and I use it all the time. It is tons faster than any of the other that I have tried. And you can see it by following the link in the sidebar.

Alaska Voyage - May 2001

Boat View Ketchikan

In May of 2001 my family went on a cruise to Alaska. We left flew into Seattle, Washington and drove to Vancouver, British Columbia to board the ship. We made two stops, one in Sitka and one in Ketchikan. Both were very small towns with not much but a main drag with shops. We didn’t end up doing any pricey excursions. But these two towns were cute.

Sailing Alaska’s Inside Passage was soooo beautiful. It was amazingly quiet; there was hardly any sound at all…just peaceful. One thing that amazed me the most was how large and empty the “Last Frontier” is, and I just saw a small portion of the coastline. It’s very cool how secluded and lonely Alaska can seem.

One of the coolest moments of the cruise was being on the upper deck in the middle of nowhere in freezing temperatures, soaking in the hot tub surrounded by the majesty of the mountains. Very cool.

Check out the gallery for a few more pictures.

Public Service Announcement

Recently Julie and I were discussing what types of phrases we should stop using because we are too old to use them. This was really sad because I don’t want to change my vocabulary just because I’m old. This also sucks because it is a reminder that I am getting old!!

“When the crap (or other explicative) hits the fan”

This is a really good expression because it really represents the worst thing that can happen. I mean really, it is the worst scenario when poop is involved. My friend over at the Mommy Going Crazy blog really knows that we are talking about here. She dealt with the lesser poop problem. She had it pretty bad but I am quite sure that no fans were involved over there.

So you got some crap, it’s a localized problem. It is a mess to clean up at this point! So imagine you have an industrial strength fan, no of these wimpy ceiling fans, I’m talking high velocity here. So you turn the fan on “high” and throw the crap at the backside of the fan. It hits the fan with a “womp” and now you are experiencing the worst scenario. The small and localized problem you had before is now terrible and most likely hazmat will need to be called in to take care of the problem. It is everywhere and has been smeared into everything.

So Julie and started talking about things phrases we could use to replace this one. So we put on our thinking caps and this is what came out.

“When the crap hits the fan” can be replace with, “when a whole family of dead (poisoned of course) bloated field mice are found under a wood pile in the garage and must be sucked out with a ShopVac fitted with a special bag and filter made specifically for this type of application.” Oh yeah, the sounds associated with this one is, “Thwump.”

So I think we have made and improvement here. I think this is more fitting for the situation where you just can’t say “when the crap hits the fan” such as during a professional lecture, during church, or while speaking for foreign dignitaries.

This has been a public service announcement

We're In

It is official. We are now living on campus. We live in Shoreline Ridge Apartments close to Red Butte Gardens. They were built in 2001 for the Olympic athletes. We wonder which athletes stayed in our apartment. We're guessing the gold medalists men's snowboarding team. But that's just a random guess.

The move went well. We were able to get it all in one trip. A loud shout-out to all those who helped. They include: James, Michelle, Mark, and Karen Raines. Bob, Gail, and Kelly Snow. Mike (Kelly's friend). Jace, Colleen, and Jason Painter. Troy and Dianne Denter. Greg and Elizabeth Maxon. Becca Gatrell. Brett Lingwall. Hmmmm, I think that was everyone. Thanks!!

So we've spent all week unpacking and I think we're finally to the point of decorating the place now. It'll be so nice when it's all finished. We're tired of living in an unsettled home. Oh, and after 3 1/2 years of marriage, we FINALLY bought a kitchen table!!! YAY!!! So we can finally have people over for dinner without doing it Japanese-style around the coffee table. We're pretty stoked. Oh, and Nate loves his own room. He's slept all the way through the night since we've been here. It's been great.

Well, we'll post some pictures of the place when we have some. Au revoir!

Are we moving??????

So on Monday morning our plan was to move to the Santa Fe Apartments in Sandy in a couple of months, soon after the end of the semester. It was a good plan that would have served us well. Anyway, our friend Becca works up at residential living at the U of U. Our other friend Shannon worked there in the past as well. Anyway, we have called both of them in the past asking about the price to live up there and have always gasped is horror at the price. So we decided to ask again knowing that our costs have gone up and it that it might be economical at this time. So we got on messenger to contact Becca and made a lunch appointment that afternoon. That next morning we paid our security deposit and made a plan to move in a week later during spring break! Crazy world!! It is funny how quickly our plans can change.

We had some really good help this weekend getting packed. My parents came over twice on Saturday and took care of Nate for like 4 hours at a time which allowed us to get almost all the packing done. We are really grateful for their help.

Today was our last day in the Ensign 2nd Ward. It was a really nice day. One of the hard things about leaving a ward is that everybody wants to say that you did a fantastic job and I don't like to be recongized publicly. It is really weird for me for some reason. I love it when Julie sings me praises but it is weird for other people to do it.

But I guess the important thing is that we really learned a lot in this ward from the people and the opportunities that we had to serve. We really learned a lot while living in this apartment. We had our first child here. What a change! So leaving here is very positive but also strangely disappointing. Julie feels it more than I do but I know where she is coming from.

The next time we blog it will be from our new apartment. How exciting!!

California 2003

In May 2003 we went on our first vacation as a married couple to Los Angeles and San Diego. We visited Julie’s grandparents, went to Six Flags Magic Mountain, and the beach. We also went to Tijuana, kind of. We got off the train, walked over the bridge, and were about to go through the turnstile into Mexico when we looked around us at the ghetto, didn’t see one gringo, and turned around, got back on the train, and headed back to San Diego. We’re not racist, just not stupid. We had no idea that the touristy part of Tijuana wasn’t right on the other side of the border and didn’t feel like wandering around the shacks lost asking to be mugged. But we had such a great time on our trip that we’ve decided we’d love to live in San Diego one day.

Rob in Balboa

You might think that I am in flight school but no I’m actually not. I’m in a really cool tester plane at the Balboa Park Aerospace Museum San Diego. This is the first of many times that I’ve drug Julie into a flight museum where she proceeds to be very bored. But since she is wonderful she pretends to have fun.

Tehachapi

Here we are at Julie’s Grandma and Grandpa Clark’s house in Tehachapi, California. What a cute couple!! We’re standing in front of one of the many pieces my grandma has painted in her lifetime.

We are standing at the end of Santa Monica Pier. It was a pretty cold and foggy day, but doesn’t the sailboat in the background look picturesque?

So that same day we went to the little dive (hahaha) of an aquarium that was on the pier. I must say that I found the aquatic life on the beach much more appealing – If you know what I mean. That is about as far as Julie was willing to go into the water.

Shameless self promotion?

Hey guys, welcome to the new Snow Family Blog. It still has a few bugs to work out but it is really cool I think. We have several new additions that I will go over for you.

First of all, we have made our first official post to the Snow Family Travel Blog. It talks briefly about Julie's trip to Mazatlan when she was 19. Definitly check that out! Next new item are the various subscription options. First for the extra techy people, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is the little orange button in the sidebar. If you follow that link it will give you several options for subscriptions in several different news readers and aggregators. Then you will get all the updates either Julie or myself will make right into your news reader. The idea here is to stop wasting time going to 10 different blogs when you can get all your blogs in one place. I use NewsGator for mine. I is web based so I can still access my feeds even when I'm not at my laptop.

Also I offer an email based subscription service for those who do not want to be bothered by RSS and have a hard time remembering to come to read the blog. Just put your email here and follow the instructions to get all my posts and updates delivered right to your email inbox.

Finally I have provided a link to my paypal account. So if you just feel like you would like to support the snow family staving student fund or even owe me money please feel free to do so. You can pay with a credit card or bank transfer. It is important to know what you do not have to have a paypal account to pay with a credit card.

I have set up the feed options for this blog and also for our travel blog so please take advantage of the options that I have provided for you and be sure to have fun.

It's Raining Babies

It is really interesting when you get the point in your life where everybody is at the same stage. Where everybody is graduationg from high school, or everybody is doing this or that. Two friends of ours just announced that they are having babies. Jeff & Diana Roberts and Ben & Kira Fowler are both having babies later this year. There are a couple people in our ward that are also having babies. So that is really exciting. I just don't look forward to the day when all my friends are 40 years old or when we all retire. It will especially suck when all my friends are dying and I'm like just waiting for my turn. That is just really weird.

Julie's X-96 Mexico Vacation

Animals

My friend (Rachel Ostler) and I went with the X96 radio show to Mazatlan, Mexico in Feburary 2001.
We had a blast hanging on the beach and going dancing at night.

In the second picture, it's kind of hard to see, but I have an iguana on my shoulder and Rachel has a
lizard on her hand. The peddlers were trying to sell them to us.

One night we were walking down the street with a couple of friends we had met there and a guy came up
to one of us and started talking. Meanwhile, there was another guy trying to take my passport and money
out of the pouch I had slung around me. I caught him, slapped his hand away, and asked him what he thought
he was doing! They left and everything was fine, but looking back on it,it was probably pretty risky of
me to do anything besides hand over the pouch...I mean, we were in Mexico and you just never know who can be potentially dangerous.

That same night we were dancing and I had on some black capris and the zipper in the back split!
Luckily, some girl in the restroom had a spare safety pin.

Rachel and I were also hit on by these two gross military (aka buzzed hair and mustaches) twins...who
happen to be, like, 35 years old. Gross!!

I remember hanging out by the hot tub and someone was holding my passport for me in his pocket and he
jumped in the water! I was like "Dude, my passport, you idiot!" I take my passport pretty seriously and
it will forever have watermarks thanks to him. Oh, well. Memories.

So that just about sums it up Mexico!

Nate's Blessing

Justin, Nate, & Chase

Yesterday was Nathan's baby blessing and we had so many people there, it filled up the whole left side of the chapel! It was amazing to see how many people took time out of their Sunday to come show support for us. We really love you all!

Here is what Nate was blessed with:
  • A deep love of learning;
  • That he will treat others like the children of God that they are;
  • That he will acquire a testimony of the Savior, the Book of Mormon, and the Prophet Joseph Smith;
  • That he will choose baptism, a mission, and a wonderful wife;
  • and that he will feel all the love that his family has for him.
What wonderful blessings!

After church we had a family luncheon at Julie's parents' house. There was great conversation, excellent food, and a killer Pick-Up-Stick competition in which Elizabeth was the ultimate champion. Congratulations to her!

We have uploaded some pictures that were taken at the luncheon. You can navigate to them by following the Snow Family Photos Link in the sidebar or follow the link below to see a slideshow.

Julie took some really good pictures of the some of our nieces & nephews holding Nate. You have to check these out!!!

New Pictures on Flickr

Nate Sleep

I just posted pictures from the last few months on our flickr account. Have fun checking out the photos of our family. Check out the link in the sidebar to get started at my flickr site.

Change your links

Having to route people to a blogger site and a flickr site, and getting people to remember the link has been quite a challenge for me thus far. I would say that it has been quite difficult even. So that is the reason I have registered a very short and concise domain name. That is right www.rjsnow.com is born!!!!!! Now rjsnow is all you need to remember!!!! I have also placed links in my sidebar that are specific to my flickr site and some other pages that I find very interesting. You also don't need to remember my email address. Truly I have made it easy for you. You can always continue to send email to my gmail account or use "anyword"@rjsnow.com. For example, rob@rjsnow.com, julie@rjsnow.com, nerd@rjsnow.com, or even asdfjposdljpqlkdyb@rjsnow.com. The choice is yours - talk about empowerment!!!! Anyway, I hope this makes it easy for you to keep track of our little family.
